THESIS

This week, I had my one-to-one session with Nigel regarding thesis and to track my progress. The meeting was helpful for me, as he gave me some pointers to focus on and told me to prepare a schedule asap and start writing stuff now. He told me to research Google scholar as well and not just rely on blogs and articles. He further added that the scope of the topic is really good and he wants to see at least 90% of the finished product when he meets me for the next sessions two weeks from now. So, this week, my task is to start materializing the contents and writing the thesis.

So, this week is our first session with Nigel after Term 3 and feedback received from the thesis proposal submitted in July. I was happy with the feedback received from Nigel and other tutors about the thesis proposal saying that it had good scope for research and a solid basis for study. Although I couldn’t work on the thesis during summer break, I thought it would be best to go hand in hand with both the thesis and FMP because if I needed to wait for one of them to finish to start the other one, there wouldn’t be enough time to complete both and submit them. So, I started my research for my thesis and referenced a load of videos related to Pan’s Labyrinth and Lighting which is basically the base of my study.

WEEK 13

This week, on the 2nd of July, I had my individual meeting with Nigel to discuss about the thesis proposal. Nigel told me to narrow down the topic as it was a bit too wide and broad and told me to try and ask a question rather than a title. He told me to focus on maybe works from some particular directors or stuffs like that. I think it was a bit too late, because now I have to rewrite and research everything from scratch again. Another suggestion by Nigel was that, in my critical report, I was framing sentences in a rather subjective manner like including the terms “awe- inspiring” and such phrases which he told me to change and be more objective. Nevertheless, the input was highly appreciable because I, myself thought the topic was a bit too broad and I could not possibly find a conclusion to it. So, back to the drawing board. I researched for a narrower topic. I wanted emotion and lighting to be my main focus, because they are the most important aspects when we come into the world of film and television. So, taking points from Nigel’s meeting, I came up with a narrower topic; “How does Guillermo del Toro utilize lighting techniques to enhance the emotional depth and atmosphere in “Pan’s Labyrinth”? “

I chose to explore how Guillermo del Toro utilizes lighting techniques to enhance the emotional depth and atmosphere in “Pan’s Labyrinth” because lighting plays a crucial role in visual storytelling. Having watched and loved this movie, I was particularly captivated by del Toro’s use of chiaroscuro lighting. Del Toro is renowned for his distinctive use of light and shadow, which not only serves to create visually stunning scenes but also deepens the emotional impact and atmosphere of his films. “Pan’s Labyrinth,” with its intricate narrative and rich, fantastical settings, provides a compelling case study to analyze how lighting can influence mood, highlight themes, and convey complex emotions. By focusing on this aspect, I aim to understand better how technical elements of filmmaking contribute to storytelling and emotional resonance.

WEEK 11

So one week after finishing and submitting my Critical Report, I restarted my work on the Thesis Proposal. I aimed to finish this quickly to maintain the momentum I’ve built over the past couple of weeks in the writing department, ensuring I don’t lose the flow. So this week, I started referring to some more articles online and creating my version for the thesis proposal.

WEEK 7

This week was my individual meeting with Nigel. I was quite nervous as I did not really know which one we had to prepare; thesis proposal or critical report. I had already begun my research for the Thesis Proposal, so I had a pretty good draft ready for the thesis proposal but I just had one topic selected for the Critical report and I did not get much time to draft a very good one with good research. But still I submitted both of them to Nigel. Nigel was quite impressed with both my topics and told me they are very distinct topics and really different ones. But he told me this week is for reviewing the Critical Report and that I can work on my Thesis Proposal as soon as I wrap the critical report.  Nigel told me to try and finish off the critical report as soon as I can and start working on the Thesis Proposal as he told me both of them looks really good and promising.

WEEK 6

This week, I drafted a very rough version of my Thesis Proposal. Although I need to be working on Critical Report right now, I thought it would be much easier for me in the long run if I can decide on a topic and wrap up the thesis proposal works as fast as I can, so that I can work on my personal project and group project. So this week, I found a very distinct topic “Cinematography and Emotions: Exploring the Relationship Between Lighting Techniques and Mood in Films”. I thought that this would be different from my critical report, yet a very important topic to conduct a research on, because as someone who watches a lot of films, I have varied emotions and moods when it comes to the lighting and cinematography a film adopts to convey a story. For me, my basic perception is that dark, moody lighting often denotes something dark, evil, sad or something related and a very bright, vibrant lighting often denotes happiness. This could be a common perception or not, so this is what I aim to research and find out.

The draft below is a really rough and quick one, where the format or literature review are not rightly referenced. I just wanted a quick layout of how my work would look like. So the past couple of days, I had researched some online sites and scholarly articles along with some director interviews to find out more about the topic. Although I could not invest much time to this now, I have a vague idea of how the relationship between lighting techniques and mood in films work. I’m planning to work more in this in the coming weeks.
